We haven’t had a whole lot of family time this past year. And we certainly haven’t taken any trips since last summer to UT. Well, we did a day trip to San Fran in January, but that was just a one day trip. So now that I’m done with this semester of school, I started craving a weekend away from everything. The kids and I have been trying to plan another trip to see Wicked somewhere…anywhere…since we saw it last June. They loved/love it SO much…we all do. So when I found it playing Memorial Day weekend in Sacramento (only three hours for us), I thought that sounded perfect. Tickets weren’t cheap, but sometimes memories trump logical right?
Before I bought the tickets, I asked the girls if they would rather go to Wicked or Disneyland, and believe it or not, they said Wicked! Isn’t that funny?? I wasn’t exactly giving them that option though because I hate Disneyland in the hot, crowded summer so much. And since we live so close, we can be a little more picky on timing when we go.
Tucker was going to be on a business trip in Northern CA from Wednesday to Friday. Friday night he, Chris and Rob were taking 10 potential clients to an A’s game in Oakland. So the girls and I drove up to Oakland to hang out with Shana and kids for a few hours, swooped over to the colloseum where the A’s play and picked up Tucker around 9:15 pm, then drove the 90 minutes over to Sacramento. Whew! The kids had fun at Shana’s house (aka my other home).
We got to our hotel around 11:30 pm. Tucker had enough Marriott points to get two nights free…and was also able to upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite! So that made the trip xtra fun to have a little apartment-type room.
I think the highlight of the trip is talking to sisters in the other room over an “old fashioned” phone!
I was so happy to get tickets to the matinee of Wicked at 2:00 pm. It was great for the kids. We got ready and headed over to a nearby Nordstrom to eat at their cafe. Had good reviews and was a simple, quick…but nice…lunch before the show. We were quite the scene everywhere we went with the matching dresses! Several people asked me if i MADE them. I laughed…and gave credit to their creative Grandma for the cute ensemble!
The escalator MIGHT have been more fun than Wicked!
We were in row H, which is very close to the front and had wonderful seats!! This really is such a creative, amazing show. It was so fun knowing every song so well this time. Last year, when we saw it…we really knew very little about it (except that Gam and many others in our family had seen it and loved it). And since then, it has been a staple around our house. What’s funny is…the girls still said they liked the first time better. I think there is something extra special about a first exposure to something that makes such an impact on you. Nothing ever replaces it.
The girls were pretty tired from very little sleep the night before, but we managed to have a great day. We got take-out food on the way back to the hotel, ate…swam for a bit with way too many other people in the hotel…and then crashed early!
